This Memorial Day will mark the last OTB event for me (The Washington Open) at least for awhile, and it's been quite an experience to say the least.

I was an active OTB player in the Seattle area in the 80's and 90's but left for 3 decades for personal reasons. However last year I decided to end the drought and played in the Oregon Class championship. My 2/5 score in the 1400-1600 section was expected due to such a long layoff, however other experiences left me wondering if OTB was a good idea for me anymore. i.e.

I found my older self in my 60's sitting in a room with 85% school age kids. When the rounds finished, usually with me losing, I offered to analyze the games with them, they looked at me as if I were speaking another language and scampered off to play with their friends. 2 of them were quickly escorted out by their mothers who frowned and looked at me suspiciously as if I were a pervert or other undesirable.

The clock: I bought a new electronic clock for the event, but despite my internet search, I couldn't find instructions for how to set secondary time controls. When I asked the TD (whom I judged to be about 17) about this, he quickly snatched the clock from my hand and began flipping various buttons to set the clock correctly. I asked him if he could slow down and let me take notes so I could do this myself. visibly irritated, he simply said it was my responsibility to learn this. By round 5 he clearly dreaded to see me coming even though the education process would not have taken more than 2 min. I could find no other players willing to help me with this. (Gone is the comradery of decades past I guess) I was wondering about the possibility of having to hire a chess coach just to teach me how to program my clock!

The site: Our stay at the DoubleTree inn was comfortable. Clean rooms with good food and surroundings, however travel, lodging, and other related expenses topped $600.00. Some simple math told me 5-6 of these events a year would put a dent in my savings.

4 more events have come and gone since then, and things have improved. I've made a few new friends, am more comfortable with different time controls, and now can program my clock like a pro. I'm not bitter. In fact, I'm deeply thankful to live in an internet age where chess competition is no farther away than my notebook computer.

I'm back at Red Hot Pawn, have entered an Open Duel tournament and will spend some time deeply considering if OTB events are really for me anymore. πŸ€”

    Hmmm.... @Ragwort

A number of IVV's long-term players were booted or have left on their own. Our 'removed' idiot Anglian managed to restructure the clan in the time he was trashing it... so who are these new players he brought on ... and are they equally idiotic.

I founded IVV in 2007, looking for a cozy place to build a casual chess confederacy. I blame myself for the whole nasty business. Too trusting, I am πŸ˜›

Thanks @VESPIN... maybe next time such a doppelganger comes along you could tell me!

I'd have to petition Russ to get the leadership back. I'd prefer one of my trusted IVV'ers to tale that position.

It's a game for goodness sakes... I leave my tiny ego at the door when I try to make it work πŸ˜›

Widget it's not your fault. Your players will come back if you take the leader role even only for a while. Anglian was on my team, I booted him because he was a cheat. I told everyone in the forum, and leaders I played in matches that he was a huge cheat. Nobody listened to me. You and I never spoke about it so you did not know. Not your fault my dear friend.

He was a con man, a cheat, and the only thing that matters is Russ caught it and did the right thing. Thank God for Russ.

Your players love you and will follow you. Take over and boot who ever he brought in and explain to them nicely you are making changes. That is it. I have had to make changes yearly. It happens.

I saw the people who left. They will come back if you take over again. But it is not your fault. It started with my clan. I booted his butt out as we don't cheat, we don't sandbag. His real rating was over 2100 providing he was not using an engine. He wanted to take over my clan when I got sick. I did not give it to him. I have three people maybe 4 that would take over for me.

Anyway, there are no sour grapes, the guy tried doing it to me. I really tried to tell everyone. He did a lot of things that were not legal in the TOS. Move forward, forget him, and do what makes you happy. Don't listen to anyone who is throwing blame or anything negative towards you or anyone on your team. They are all good people. Get your people back in my humble opinion.

The guy was a cheat. Nothing else needs to be said about him. lstcry was or seemed to be a great supporter of him despite having the truth told to him.

Just be careful he does not try to come back as a 1200 player to join your team again. He is a huge sandbagger which is one reason i booted him.

I hope you take your team back. Then pick who you want to run it well.

    All my best,
    Michael

Each can have his own opinion and his own dream, but not his own facts, and that is where the shoe is pinching right now.

I do get very tired of people who behave badly enough to get evicted, then come back again and again under different names. I prefer people with familiar faces (even battered or disguised ones) to masked ones. And before anyone decides to accuse me of racism or religionism, I'm thinking of full-face bike helmets and ski-masks.

We could ask you the same questions. See below. But for me, I do not want answers anymore. My stuff from now will contain the answers in my posts. Very civilized. No posters or screaming.

But for me, I do not want answers anymore.

I understand, those answers can be painful. Biden puts experienced professionals in charge of government departments. Trump - Family members, TV show hosts, ex models and playmates (colorful, but not very effective!) So, I can understand why you don't want answers. 😲

Widget, I so wanted to tell you personally but I figured you would think I was jealous of the cheater being in first place. I wasn't. Most never thought of him as winning anyway. They knew he was a cheat. I did put it in the forums though.

I give you my word, because many of us are and will be watching, if anything looks weird or history repeats itself, anything I know I will share with you especially if it has to do with your clan, the clan you built. I know Coquette will come back, in my heart I know. The others will come back to. Take the lead then ask who wants to take over for you. And then you just play and have fun it that is what you want. You have wonderful people there that care about you, and I am sure you will find someone to lead for you.

Just keep your chin up my friend. You built the team and should be proud. Coquette did an amazing job as well.

I promise, I will tell you when something is going bad. I'm sorry I did not tell you sooner.

All my best to you my friend,
    Michael
